Comic Fiesta Day

it has been a fruitful visit to comic fiesta today.

for all those who might be there, be on the lookout for 'Liga Prajurit' comic on sale in the 'Project F.E.A.R.' booth in B13 (premium booth)

Apologies for the late update on the location. I came late at about noon with having to wait in the longest queue ever, then finally drop the comics off at the booth. Also I had no internet at the time to quickly update on the matter.

photos will come up later. Stay tuned.

Tiny update

It'll be Comic Fiesta by this saturday and sunday and I'm hoping to be there with my comics to be sold there.

So there's nothing much else till then but I've been working something for a while.

Another of a sketch/test I've been working on for the upcoming work.

A mixture of 18-19thc Ottoman and post colonial Malay uniforms for high ranking officials.

What I really tried to emphasize here is the detailed use of patterns. I figured out that this could be an attraction that could be used to even further.

Even so, the actual challenge is repeating the patterns while not screwing up the proportion of each object. The pattern designs used are actual existing designs, all that changed are the look and shape of the uniform itself.

I haven't uploaded the traced pattern objects that I used and intend to use but I can say that most are embroidered cloth/batik patterns. I also used wood carving patterns that I find fitting.

More will come later.

PS: I've created a page compiling all the works, concepts and such for this work in a page for storing as well as viewing. You may check them out if you wish at http://zharifhazwan.blogspot.com/p/suvarnabhumi-golden-earth.html

As for now it will act mostly as storage, details and story will come up later.

Hope to see you all in Comic Fiesta 2013!

First of all, apologies for the lack of updates for the past few weeks before. Not only we had problems with our local internet provider that caused us with no internet connection for two weeks straight, I also had little artworks to show, just a bunch of sketches I did during work in which are mostly still just studies for the sci fi works and such that isn't really worth showing.

I hope it was worth the wait to know that during that absence I've been trying to find a good and cheap local printing shop that was able to print out the comics.

And finally, it's done.

Hope to see you in Comic Fiesta 2013!

Upcoming works minor update

As for right now, I am still developing on the cover for the Liga Prajurit comic and it's coming around rather slowly as I am still unclear on what's best for it.

But as a filler, I wish to show you another update of my sci fi work,

Today, it's all about fashion~

I wanted to romanticize traditional clothing yet still looks current/modern. I've made my decision to use the Malay Royal Palace Guard as my base reference and I started from there.

Notice that the other one thing I'm trying to emphasize is the exclusive use of cloth. Where other countries use chevrons, stars and buttons to tell what unit/rank/profession, I've found out that the Malays used cloth not only for everyday practical uses but also exclusively for this function - to symbolize a certain rank, authority, profession, pride, etc.

The first picture shows my few first attempts, the farthest to the left is my base reference - The Malay Royal Palace Guards. From then on, I started playing with colours and accessories, length of the sampin(waist cloth), etc. For instance, the other three not only to test how they look like in different colours and in different variations but also to test if it could be suited to the commonly used sci fi colour-themed ship crews. (yellow for engineers, green for gunners, etc)

The next step, I tried a little more challenge - putting specific batik woven patterns to make each profession/rank more distinctive from the other. The farthest from the left was the one I had most fun because I barely made any changes to the kevlar from the original real life design of a jawi inscripted leather vest used by the Malays. I only added shoulder and elbow pads to make it appear combat effective. The other three are more exploration as well as emphasizing the use of the chindai (shoulder cloth). This particular cloth is used to emphasize authority.

This third attempt started out as a joke but turned to be thrice as fun. What I'm trying to do is to make state-specific themed wear to discern easily each other of their native origin/unit/etc.
Here, we have Terengganu, Kelantan, Pahang and Kedah from left to right respectively.

I haven't made much progress on female clothes but so far this is it bu I had fun with them and will probably do more.

Well, that's it. hope it was worth a look!

Minor updates and a little 'teaser'

For the past few days, I've been repairing most of the early pages and it's coming out better than I hoped. At least if not better, at least it will look consistent.

So for the time being, as a filler, let me introduce a little bit of something that I've been working for the past few weeks; sketches or drawings that I am using as a reference for future work in progress.

This work is, in simply speaking, to explore the sci fi genre. I can't say much for now not because it's super top secret and I'm not sharing but because without a body of work to show, talking too much would be just verbose and pointless.

The idea came while I was working on Liga Prajurit but was never started until the final semester degree of art school where I realized it's potential. After finally finishing degree and Liga Prajurit, I continued it's research and development until now.

Here are some of the works recently done for the work,

Drones/robots that can be ridden, may act on their own or by even remote. Functions as personal transportation, reconnaissance, fighter/bombers.

Example of trading ships/battleships. Some of these ships have dual functions; in peace time, functions as an R&R ship for travellers or trading barge. In war time, functions as a fully armed battle ship.

Wartime only ship. Removes all civilian/trading uses for complete military use; mounting an anti-ship railgun.

While they are not final, simply used as an early reference, should be enough to give a rough idea of how it will look.

Done using Flash 8 Basic.

Liga Prajurit Page 40, Publishing Plans and more.

Liga Prajurit Page 40

I have to first apologize for the late entry. Last week, I've been facing a lot of issues that slowed down on working on my comics considerably. Although during that time, I've reassessed to the weakness of my comics and referred to other works to how to get it better. Even though it is still difficult to keep a constant consistency with meeting weekly deadlines, I will do my best to get this better.

As a plus for being late, I've uploaded a sketch of my hopefully next work that is still in development but has already the main ideas and story built.

Notice that Jawi/Arabic stamp there? I ordered it from a local stamp vendor to have it in Turkish Tughra design with my freakin' name on it. It's the best.

Plus plus, I've managed to find independent publishers in my work place and managed to ask around to how should I publish this work. And so, if god so wills it, I will try to finish this work and publish it by the end of the year. So be on the lookout for future updates on it. If it works out, of course.

Liga Prajurit Chapter 1 page

A quick blog update announcement for all future viewers,

as the title suggests, thanks to a friend of mine, kind enough to rebuild this whole blog site for easy and user-friendly, not only that it is much more navigable, all labels, all events are now separated according to the top label bars.

You may also can now view ALL of the most recent and updated pages of Liga Prajurit in the "Liga Prajurit Chapter 1" on the right part of this blog.

Here is the link to it for your convenience,

http://zharifhazwan.blogspot.com/p/comics.html

I'd like to thank my friend again for helping me out with this blog and I hope you all can enjoy reading and staying in this blog much longer!

Liga Prajurit 36-37

Currently trying to post works much more frequently than before. Loading a bulk of 10 pages like I used to would be too slow, so now, I'm going to try uploading at least 1 or 2 every week.

And yes, still am working on this, just that I have a full time job now so I would have ample free time just enough to do a page or two every week.

Stay tuned!

edit: oh my god i just realized i spelled captain wrong in portuguese oh my god im so sorry portuguese peeples i didnt have interent at the time and quickly assumed aaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Liga Prajurit Page 24-35 Update

Finally, this has been long overdue.

I hope it's worth the wait, enjoy!

You may notice that some pages seem very empty. This is either because I really have no idea WHAT to put there or where to put any sort of backgrounds sometimes.. I guess I still haven't fully grasped the establishing shot thing which I hoped to have worked but I guess I overdone it.

Another thing is that I've been having consistencies problem while doing these pages. Reason being is that I stopped for a very long time since the second part (13-23 pages) and during that time, I did not only improved a lot in terms of technical and compositioning but even simplifying the faces and the designs as well. This is very noticeable in the early pages that were much more detailed and I wish to fix them after finishing the last pages of the comic. The simplification not only helps in giving a much smoother look but it also helps in drawing the characters with much faster speed and I really want to do these pages fast.

I will rework on these noticeably awkward pages but as for now, hope you'll still be able to enjoy the works so far. Thank you!
